The Zespri Board has today approved the commercialisation of an additional red variety – Red80 – to extend the commercial selling season for Zespri RubyRed? Kiwifruit. The decision follows the doubling of Zespri RubyRed Kiwifruit volume this year, with more than three million trays sold across key markets including New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, Mainland China, Taiwan, South Korea and the USA.Zespri董事會(huì)今天批準(zhǔn)了另一種紅色品種Red80的商業(yè)化，以延長(zhǎng)Zespri RubyRed?獼猴桃的商業(yè)銷售季節(jié)。在做出這一決定之前，Zespri RubyRed獼猴桃的銷量今年翻了一番，在新西蘭、新加坡、日本、中國(guó)大陸、臺(tái)灣、韓國(guó)和美國(guó)等主要市場(chǎng)售出了300多萬(wàn)個(gè)托盤。

“Red kiwifruit naturally tends to be shorter storing than green and gold kiwifruit, so we currently have a limited sales window of around eight weeks. Following the commercialisation of Red19 in 2019, commercial volumes of Zespri RubyRed? Kiwifruit were first sold in 2022, with the fruit extended to new markets each year to a current presence in 13 markets. Zespri RubyRed? Kiwifruit deliver a unique, vibrant red kiwifruit with a sweet berry taste and nutritional benefits that set it apart from SunGold and Green. “Our research shows around 30 percent of people who purchase Zespri RubyRed? are new to kiwifruit, so it brings more people into the category and creates additional opportunity for our other products,” adds Mr Te Brake. Red80 has been naturally bred through Zespri’s joint breeding programme with Plant & Food Research (now part of the Bioeconomy Science Institute). In 2021, Zespri and the Bioeconomy Science Institute established the Kiwifruit Breeding Centre, a joint venture to accelerate the delivery of new cultivars. Zespri currently has 20 varieties of kiwifruit, kiwiberries, and males in pre-commercial trials, reflecting its commitment to deliver new varieties faster to meet new consumer needs, drive additional sales, and continue its growth trajectory after exceeding its ambition of reaching $4.5 billion in global sales by 2025.
